The Marine Industry Cares Foundation was born as a fundraising entity most recognized for the annual Spin-A-Thon. The first Spin-A-Thon was organized in 2009 by a group of friends helping out a great cause! After only three weeks of planning, $30,000 was raised for Kids in Distress. Throughout the year, supporters also planned and held community events, such as golf tournaments, mixers and toy drives. These events have connected the marine industry with the local community through team-building activities, which have created lasting memories and changed lives.
The extreme generosity and interest of the marine industry convinced the founders of the Spin-A-Thon in 2011 to organize a non-profit that would lay the groundwork for similar events aiming to make a positive impact locally and in other maritime communities around the world. From a grassroots effort and a small event, the Marine Industry Cares Foundation was born. Since its inception, more than $750,000 has been raised by MICF through the Spin-A-Thon and has been carefully managed to produce the event, support the Foundation, and directly benefit two local charities – Kids In Distress (KID) and Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center (CDTC).
As a 501(C)3, MICF aims to serve as the philanthropic vessel for the marine industry as a whole. The significant impact of the maritime industry – recreational marine, cruise, and commercial shipping – in Greater Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, accounts for hundreds of thousands of jobs, billions in total economic value and an immeasurable level of community goodwill. Over the course of the past five years MICF has planned or participated in various community events such as child abuse and neglect awareness campaigns, back-to-school supply drives, food drives, holiday toy drives, and most recently in the summer of 2015, a Marine Immersion Summer Camp, which was a two week summer camp introducing high school students to the marine industry. Through grassroots efforts, small and large events, and information sharing MICF is aiming to make a positive impact and show that the marine industry cares.
MICF has organized groups to participate in Waterway Cleanup and since 2015 has partnered with MIASF to produce the annual county wide event taking responsibility for sites in the northern sector of the county.
